Staff Reviews

The Graveyard Book is about a young boy who, after his family is murdered, winds up being raised in the Graveyard by vampires, ghosts, and witches. This is an award winning novel full of mystery, adventure and the supernatural. Nobody “Bod” Owens is taught by ghosts, protected by a supernatural being, and befriended by witches and ghouls. Bod’s life can never be his own until the men that want him dead are eliminated. Though it is written in the present, it is unclear as to what time period the story takes place in. This is mostly due to history being taught by the ancient ghosts who lived it and the general never-changing atmosphere of the Graveyard. This is a novel about an unusual child raised in extraordinary circumstances.

— Rosa, New Jersey

Fall 2008 Kids' List

“A delightfully layered story of Nobody Owens, who is raised by the semi-living and the dead in a graveyard. Gaiman uses wit and his depth of knowledge of the arcane to create a safe and nurturing world for the young orphan to grow and thrive in. This will be a joy for all ages!”
— Jane Jacobs, Porter Square Books, Cambridge, MA

Description

The original hardcover edition of a perennial favorite, The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman, which has sold more than one million copies and is the only novel to win both the Newbery Medal and the Carnegie Medal.

Bod is an unusual boy who inhabits an unusual place—he's the only living resident of a graveyard. Raised from infancy by the ghosts, werewolves, and other cemetery denizens, Bod has learned the antiquated customs of his guardians' time as well as their ghostly teachings—such as the ability to Fade so mere mortals cannot see him.

Can a boy raised by ghosts face the wonders and terrors of the worlds of both the living and the dead?

The Graveyard Book is the winner of the Newbery Medal, the Carnegie Medal, the Hugo Award for best novel, the Locus Award for Young Adult novel, the American Bookseller Association’s “Best Indie Young Adult Buzz Book,” a Horn Book Honor, and Audio Book of the Year.
