“Fractured Fairytales with long pointy teeth.” That’s what I usually write on the staff recommends cards that I stick in the top of Ben Loory’s Stories for Nighttime and Some for the Day when I find it in our stores. That’s how in my travels in my own small way I attempt to proselytize for this wonderful little book. But those cards are only the size of somebody’s palm and my handwriting is not exactly upper drawer nor compact so with them I am forced to be brief (and a little facile). Here I can afford to be a tad more expansive. Stories for Nighttime and Some for the Day is a collection of short stories unlike any you are likely to come across. Loory’s stories are often just a few pages long but manage to create a sense of breadth and depth that suggest whole zip codes of acreage (zip codes for odd, out of the way places as imagined by someone a little like a cross between David Lynch and Doctor Seuss). These stories work with the inexorable logic of dreams. Animals talk, inanimate objects fall in love, trees wander about the landscape just because they can, until they can't.
Loory’s stories are scary or sad or funny or more often than not all of the above in equal measure. They are full of incident or nothing happens or somehow both. You don’t finish these stories so much as wake from them. A Hudson Booksellers Best Book of 2011

About the Author
Ben Loory’s fables and tales have appeared in The New Yorker, Tin House, READ Magazine, and Fairy Tale Review, and been heard on This American Life and Selected Shorts. He is also the author of Tales of Falling and Flying and a picture book for children, The Baseball Player and the Walrus. A graduate of Harvard University and the American Film Institute MFA program in screenwriting, Loory lives in Los Angeles, where he is an Instructor for the UCLA Extension Writers’ Program.
