Subtitled "A Year of Food Life", this delightful memoir is a mixture of scientific facts, delicious cooking tips, and an authentic description of a family's farm life today--in the 21st Century. Barbara Kingsolver, a gifted storyteller, her husband Steven L. Hopp, a scientist, and a college-age daughter, share the authorship of this book. It is an account of their family's resolve to spend one year eating only what they and their near neighbors could harvest---nothing from the super markets, which all year long have citrus from California, bananas from South America, veggies from Florida. Making such a decision was momentous, but being able to succeed at such a project was....well, a miracle! Little daughter Lucy is not one of the authors of this book, but her hands are photographed for the front cover---holding beautiful Christmas lima beans. And her chick-raising project will delight your soul. In addition to a fascinating reading adventure, we are given much "food for thought" about our own eating habits.

“Barbara Kingsolver's account of buying only food raised in her own neighborhood speaks to us all about the urgency of living on, and in, our respective communities.”
