On a hot summer day in 1932, Andy Connors, who runs a garage that serves Route 66, is bitten by a rabid skunk. Fortunately, a man named Yates stops for gas and takes control. He drives Andy for treatments and returns to manage the garage and help Andy's two daughters and Leona, the tough and tender woman who takes care of them. Soon caught in a turmoil of gossip and threats, Yates and Leona find their new love tested at every turn-especially when her vindictive brother is murdered.
