The Betrayal by Helen Dunmore is a sequel to her powerful novel, The Siege, but it can easily stand on its own. Andrei is a young doctor in Leningrad in 1952 whose life unravels when the son of a notorious secret police officer is admitted to his hospital. Just like The Siege, The Betrayal is sad, stoic, and so compelling. Dunmore does a beautiful job of creating three dimensional characters that are emblematic, but not stereotypical, who are hopeful, but realistic, exercising some power of choice in a terrible situation. It's straightforward storytelling that is the mark of a talented writer.
