Set in a 1950s Minnesota small town, Ordinary Grace is a novel that shows us what happens to a simple family in a simple time that has to deal with unspeakable tragedy. Frank Drum is a young kid, son of a local minister, who is known for being a good hearted trouble maker. He is part of the all-American family with a musically gifted older sister who is dating the star football player and a younger brother who he has to stick up for. Sticking up is a theme running throughout the novel, showing us different prejudices that form in the town; a multiple amount of people and situations are targeted. The small town he lives in is plagued by tragedy throughout the summer and he has to learn quickly the difference between an idyllic childhood and the harsh reality of adulthood.
