Winner of the Milkweed Prize for Fiction, this novel – set in Uruguay – begins quietly and takes the reader by storm, in much the same way that the violence of her country’s dictatorship overtakes the main character, Magda. The author’s touch is magical. The novel is at once a compelling love story and the moving portrait of a family, a neighborhood and a country. It recounts political tragedy with compassion, but not melodrama. Issues of class, race, and ethnicity are dealt with subtly but powerfully. In short, The Tree of Red Stars is absolutely enjoyable.

Winner of the Milkweed National Fiction Prize and the Friends of America Writers Award in 1997, this vivid debut, set in Uruguay in the 1960s, charts the toll of political events on a young woman and those close to her, as their democracy is gradually taken over by a military dictatorship.
