It’s tough to review a cookbook because obviously in the short time I had it I didn’t make every recipe in here, or even half of them, and as interesting as the little anecdotes between sections, or as beautiful as the pictures of the food and country may be, a cookbook is only as good as the recipes in it. That being said, the 2 day, labor-intensive pastel de nata recipe is worth the cover price alone. Having lived in Portugal for a spell I’ve found myself trying desperately to recreate the little custard tarts found at every corner bakery and café to no avail. This recipe was by far the closest I’ve found to the real thing. Get this book, make pastel de natas, be happier…it’s that simple!

About the Author
A first generation descendant of Portuguese immigrants from the Alto Alentejo region of Portugal, Ana Patuleia Ortins grew up with the lore and traditions attached to the food of her ancestors. She holds a degree in culinary arts and teaches Portuguese cooking in her own kitchen and at local New England colleges. She is the author of Authentic Portuguese Cooking.
