Staff Reviews

2666 is hugely ambitious and wildly successful. Make no mistake, it is a novel that poses diverse challenges to the reader. Colored by modern global tragedies, and the specter of Bolano’s own impending death, the playfulness that made The Savage Detectives such a joy has darkened in 2666 to an almost unbearable pallor. Yet, bearing witness to its virtuosic riffs on the Great Themes is exhilarating. From academia to the streets, five interrelated tales revolve around the unpunished murders of hundreds of young women in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. It is a prismatic refraction of a black hole. Achieving through poetry what is impossible in life, both timely and timeless, 2666 is a masterpiece.

“2666 is the culmination of Roberto Bolano's expansive brilliance, as traces of such previous works as The Savage Detectives have been perfected and fused together seemlessly as part of a larger whole. This is a daring book that takes major risks throughout, and its overall impact is impossible to ignore or ever forget.”
— Nathan Halter, The Doylestown Bookshop, Doylestown, PA

Description

The novel is divided into five parts (Bolano originally imagined it being published as five books) and begins with the adventures and love affairs of a small group of scholars dedicated to the work of Benno von Archimboldi, a reclusive German novelist. They trace the writer to the Mexican border town of Santa Teresa (read: Juarez), but there the trail runs dry, and it isn't until the final section that readers learn about Benno and why he went to Santa Teresa. This is considered one of the best novels of this Century.
